The Greenbelt Middle team has proved once more to be a formidable opponent. After two entire halves without any scores from either side, things were almost at a stalemate. The game had to go into overtime.
Overtime in soccer puts such an immense amount of pressure on the goalie and only 5 select people, it is unreal. Five players from each team are chosen and/or choose to go up to the goal and take a penalty kick. The goalie is there to try to stop them. All ten people took kicks, alternating teams, and only two goals made it. Those two were for Greenbelt.
(#3) goalie Dumebi saved every single goal during the match and three of the overtime kicks. That is hands-down, some excellent work right there. Good job, Dumebi, and it’s terrible there’s so much pressure on you. But you make it work!
“Y’all made it a lot farther than the boys did.” Coach Ms. Dudley told the team. “They didn’t stand a chance!”
In the end, the team’s classic cheer still rang out through the fields despite losing. Though tears were shed, it was a battle well fought.
“They couldn’t even score during the game, they had to get into overtime to score!” pointed out player Ottilie.
So maybe the DKFI girls are out of the playoffs. Okay. So maybe they lost. That happens.
“The same thing happened to NS Just yesterday,” said coach M. Kometa. “It’s a game. There are winners and losers. It happens.”
The game ended with a final score of 0-2. Afterward, the girls all cheered up and went to the much-deserved school dance. Even if they are extremely talented athletes, they still like to have some childish fun too!
